How to play Backgammon

Make Backgammon your next activity in the game library. Bear off all fifteen pieces before the opponent. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

Local two players; no doubling cube, stakes or remote matching.

Try a deliberate move

After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again. Use the example to check your reasoning.

Your goal

Bear off all fifteen pieces before the opponent. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Check the rules when you are unsure.

Step by step

  1. Roll and use the maximum legal number of dice; doubles give four moves.
  2. Enter barred pieces first.
  3. Points with at least two enemies are blocked; a lone enemy is hit.
  4. Bear off only after all pieces reach home.

Controls

Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Avoid pressing the same control repeatedly while a move is being processed.

A useful example

When only one die can be used and either is individually playable, use the larger die. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Notice the change in the playing area.

Watch out for this

An oversized bear-off requires no piece farther from the exit. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. Locate the buttons and input area before beginning a long round. Use the on-screen labels to avoid an accidental restart.
