How to play Tangram

Choose a round of Tangram and settle into its rules. Fill the square target with seven pieces, without gaps or overlap. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Check the rule that explains your first action. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

Arrange seven pieces into the square target. Rotate or flip a piece to fit; this game currently offers one target shape.

Make the controls familiar

Locate the buttons and input area before beginning a long round. Use the on-screen labels to avoid an accidental restart. Refer to the controls when needed.

Your goal

Fill the square target with seven pieces, without gaps or overlap. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Check the rules when you are unsure.

Step by step

  1. Drag a selected piece.
  2. Rotate in 45-degree steps or flip it.
  3. Use snapping for precise alignment.
  4. Check the layout or use one-piece assistance.

Controls

Mouse/touch dragging and rotate/flip buttons. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Return to the rules if the result is unexpected.

A useful example

The parallelogram may need flipping rather than rotation. Compare this with the rule that governs the move. Keep the controls nearby.

Watch out for this

Overlaps do not count as filling the target. Check the rule before repeating the action. After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again.
